Knicks Claim Their First NBA Title Since 1973

(MENAFN) Jalen Brunson delivered one of the most commanding performances in NBA Finals history Saturday night, pouring in a game-high 45 points to propel the New York Knicks past the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 and clinch the franchise's first championship in 53 years — ending a drought that dated to 1973.

The victory sealed a 4-1 series triumph for New York, who rallied from a double-digit deficit yet again on enemy territory to secure the Larry O'Brien Trophy — the third title in franchise history.

Brunson, named Finals MVP, punctuated his historic night with a go-ahead layup midway through the fourth quarter, then iced the win at the free-throw line, finishing with three assists alongside his 45 points. His supporting cast contributed just enough: Josh Hart delivered a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, Mikal Bridges chipped in 14 points, and OG Anunoby contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals — including clutch free throws that helped lock down the closing minutes.

San Antonio made the Knicks earn every point. Rookie guard Dylan Harper was electric off the bench, tallying 25 points to lead the Spurs, while Victor Wembanyama posted a monster line of 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Julian Champagnie added 14 points in support.

The Spurs controlled the tempo early, holding a 23-13 edge after the first quarter as New York endured one of its most painful offensive stretches of the entire postseason. San Antonio carried a 42-37 lead into halftime and briefly extended the advantage to double digits in the third period, entering the fourth quarter ahead 72-65.

But the Knicks — who had already pulled off the largest comeback in NBA Finals history in Game 4 — refused to buckle. Brunson orchestrated a relentless fourth-quarter charge, erasing the deficit and eventually putting New York in front for good.

The final minutes were not without drama. Karl-Anthony Towns fouled out late in the contest, temporarily threatening to unravel the hard-fought lead. But Mitchell Robinson stepped up with a crucial offensive rebound in the closing seconds, and Anunoby sealed the triumph from the charity stripe as the Knicks held on for the four-point win.
