US Says Dozens of Ships Diverted in Strait of Hormuz Blockade Operation
(MENAFN) The United States announced Saturday that it has redirected around 100 commercial vessels and disabled four others as part of an ongoing enforcement operation linked to restrictions on shipping connected to Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, US Central Command stated that over the past six weeks, American forces have been actively managing maritime traffic in the region, including allowing limited humanitarian shipments while restricting other vessels.
“Over the past six weeks, more than 15,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen have redirected 100 vessels, disabled four, and allowed 26 humanitarian aid ships to pass,” CENTCOM said in a statement shared on the US social media company X.
Reports indicate that the operation began on April 13 and targets commercial shipping entering or leaving Iranian ports across multiple maritime zones, including the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
CENTCOM said the enforcement effort involves a large military presence, including carrier strike groups, amphibious units, destroyers, and more than 200 aircraft and naval vessels.
"Our service members are doing extraordinary work," said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. "They have been highly effective by executing the mission with precision and professionalism, allowing zero trade into and out of Iranian ports, which has squeezed Iran economically."
The operation comes amid ongoing regional tensions following earlier US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. Reports state that Iran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, along with disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, though subsequent negotiations reportedly failed to produce a lasting agreement. Reports added that the truce was later extended indefinitely while enforcement operations in the region continued.
