Germany Condemns Israeli Minister’s Remarks on West Bank Eviction Plans

(MENAFN) The government of Germany has expressed strong concern over comments made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding the potential eviction of the Palestinian community of Khan al-Ahmar in the occupied West Bank, according to reports.

Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Josef Hinterseher said the statements had been noted with “the utmost concern” and firmly rejected by the German government.

According to reports, the German Foreign Ministry reiterated that “there must be no expulsions” and urged the Israeli government to abandon any related plans.

Officials stressed that Berlin’s position remains unchanged, warning that unilateral measures linked to settlement expansion in the West Bank undermine international law and increase regional instability.

“Unilateral measures -- as part of a broader intensification of settlement policy, into which the entire situation in the West Bank is embedded -- violate international law, pose a risk of further instability in the region and in the West Bank itself, and significantly stand in the way of a two-state solution,” the spokesman said.

According to reports, British media outlet Middle East Eye said a request had been submitted to the International Criminal Court seeking confidential arrest warrants against Smotrich and Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Smotrich rejected the allegations, calling the warrant request “a declaration of war” and claiming it represented an attempt to impose what he described as “security suicide” through sanctions and legal action.
