Italy’s Leader Pushes for Stronger India Cooperation

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a formal diplomatic welcome in Rome on Wednesday, as Italian President Sergio Mattarella made an emphatic push for deeper bilateral ties during a high-profile summit at the Quirinale Palace.

"Your presence in Italy is an honor for Italy and demonstrates our shared desire to broadly and fully intensify our collaboration," Mattarella said, addressing Modi directly during the presidential talks, according to an Italian news agency.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani was present alongside the two leaders, signaling the broad political weight Rome is lending to the engagement.

Mattarella also took a moment to spotlight India's growing footprint within Italian society, lauding the Indian diaspora as "highly valued" and acknowledging that it contributes "dynamically, actively and diligently" to the nation.

The diplomatic momentum carried into the afternoon, where Modi was slated to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Villa Doria Pamphili for formal bilateral discussions. The session was expected to include a multi-agreement signing ceremony, coordinated joint statements to the press, and an official working lunch.

Symbolism ran alongside substance throughout the visit. Modi gifted the Italian government a black mulberry tree, with both leaders set to take part in a planting ceremony at Villa Doria Pamphili — a carefully choreographed tribute to the strengthening bonds between the two nations.

The groundwork for Wednesday's talks had already been laid the evening before. Meloni welcomed Modi to the Italian capital on Tuesday night with a dinner, after which the two leaders toured the Colosseum together.

"Welcome to Rome, my friend," Meloni wrote on the US social media platform X, posting alongside a photograph taken with the Indian prime minister.

Modi later confirmed the dinner had been substantive, noting that the pair had exchanged views on "a wide range of topics" over the course of their evening together.
