Russia Announces Victory Day Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Russia's Defense Ministry declared a ceasefire for May 8–9 on Monday in observance of Victory Day commemorations, expressing hope that Ukraine would reciprocate — while simultaneously issuing a stark threat against the capital Kiev should the celebrations be disrupted.

The truce was announced in accordance with a directive by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the ministry stating that Russian forces would take all necessary measures to guarantee security throughout the commemorative period marking the 81st anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.

In the same breath, the ministry issued a pointed warning: any attempts to interfere with the Victory Day celebrations would trigger a "massive missile strike" on central Kiev. Officials added that Russia had previously held back from such action out of humanitarian considerations, despite possessing the capability to carry it out, and urged both Kiev civilians and foreign diplomatic personnel to leave the city in a timely manner.

The ceasefire announcement follows a phone call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump on April 29, during which the Russian leader conveyed his country's readiness to observe a truce over the Victory Day period.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded on April 30, stating that he had directed his representatives to reach out to Trump's team to seek clarification on the specifics of Moscow's ceasefire proposal — leaving the prospect of a reciprocal halt in fighting uncertain as the commemorative dates draw near.
