Hakeem Jeffries Slams Trump, Republicans Over DHS Shutdown

(MENAFN) US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Monday sharply criticized President Donald Trump and House Republicans over the ongoing shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), calling for immediate approval of a bipartisan funding measure passed by the Senate.

Jeffries told reporters that DHS has now been shut down for more than 70 days, placing responsibility for the deadlock on Republican lawmakers, whom he accused of advancing what he described as an aggressive immigration policy agenda centered on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Donald Trump and House Republicans have now shut down the Department of Homeland Security…to continue to drive their extreme immigration agenda and violent mass deportation machine led by ICE down the throats of the American people,” he said.

He highlighted that the Senate had already passed a funding package with unanimous bipartisan backing, but said it has yet to move forward in the House of Representatives.

“Several weeks ago, a bill was sent over…supported by every single Republican and every single Democrat in the Senate,” he said. “It’s a bipartisan bill that has been languishing in the House.”

According to Jeffries, the stalled legislation would ensure full funding for key DHS agencies, including the Secret Service, the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, and cybersecurity personnel responsible for safeguarding critical infrastructure.
