UN Secretary-General Hails Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Extension

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed a three-week extension to the existing 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, expressing hope the pause in hostilities will open the door to meaningful dialogue between the two countries, his spokesman announced Friday.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric conveyed the Secretary-General's position in an official statement, declaring that Guterres "urges all actors to fully respect the cessation of hostilities, to cease any further attacks, and to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, at all times."

The UN chief reaffirmed the world body's unwavering support for all efforts to bring an end to the fighting and ease the suffering of civilian communities on both sides of the Blue Line — the border demarcation established by the United Nations in 2000 separating Lebanon and Israel.

In the same statement, Guterres renewed his call on Hezbollah and other non-state armed actors to respect the Lebanese government's authority across its full territory and to support the state's exclusive control over weapons and armed forces. He simultaneously pressed Israel to execute a complete withdrawal from positions north of the Blue Line, in full observance of Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Secretary-General expressed cautious optimism that the ceasefire extension would lend momentum to broader, ongoing efforts toward a durable and comprehensive peace across the region.

The extension was announced Thursday by U.S. President Donald Trump, who confirmed the existing 10-day truce between Israel and Lebanon would be prolonged by an additional three weeks.
