Lebanon Warns of Deepening Humanitarian Crisis from Israeli War

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Tuesday that Lebanon requires €500 million (over $588 million) over the next six months to respond to a deepening humanitarian crisis linked to the ongoing war with Israel.

Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, Salam said Lebanese judicial authorities have been asked to investigate the killing of a French peacekeeper serving with the UNIFIL and to ensure accountability for those responsible.

The UN peacekeeping mission said it had opened an investigation after one of its positions in southern Lebanon came under small-arms fire from unidentified non-state actors in the village of Ghanduriyah over the weekend. Hezbollah has denied any involvement.

Salam stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire with Israel and said he discussed plans for an international conference aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s army and security institutions.

“Lebanon did not choose this war; it was imposed on it,” he said, calling for full adherence to the ceasefire agreement.

He added that lasting stability depends on Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of displaced civilians, and the release of detainees, while reiterating that Lebanon “needs €500 million to confront the humanitarian crisis in the coming six months.”
