Australia, EU Sign Landmark Free Trade Agreement
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly announced the breakthrough following a bilateral meeting in Canberra on Tuesday morning, confirming both sides had formally struck an agreement on the Australia-EU free trade deal. The accord will dismantle trade and investment barriers between the two markets once domestic ratification processes are completed.
The terms are sweeping in scope: 98 percent of Australian exports will gain duty-free access to the EU market, while virtually all European tariffs on Australian agricultural products will be scrapped entirely.
Addressing reporters alongside Albanese at Parliament House, von der Leyen framed the agreement as a defining statement to a world increasingly shaped by economic coercion, noting that great powers are deploying tariffs as "leverage."
"Open rules-based trade delivers some positive outcomes. Trust matters more than transactions," she said.
Albanese echoed that sentiment, casting the deal as proof that multilateral trade norms can endure despite mounting pressure. "We stand for free and fair trade," he said. "At a time when that is under some pressure globally, I think this agreement sends a message to the world that it is possible to stick to the rules."
The EU ranks as Australia's third-largest trading partner and its second-largest source of foreign investment, according to Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade — underscoring the significant economic weight behind the agreement.
Negotiations first launched in 2018 before collapsing in 2023 over deep disagreements on agricultural market access. Talks were revived in 2025, galvanized in part by sweeping tariff measures introduced by the United States.
Beyond trade, Albanese and von der Leyen also inked a separate security partnership on Tuesday, expanding bilateral cooperation across defense industry development, maritime security, cybersecurity, economic security, and counter-terrorism — broadening what is shaping up to be a significantly deepened strategic alliance.
