Eurozone Jobless Rate Falls to 6.1 Percent in January
Eurostat, the European Union's statistics authority, confirmed the drop — catching markets off guard, as consensus forecasts had widely anticipated the rate to hold steady at 6.2%.
Across the broader EU, the jobless rate mirrored that momentum, easing to 5.8% from 5.9% the previous month. Eurostat estimated that 12.93 million people across the bloc remained out of work in January — with 10.77 million of those concentrated within the eurozone alone.
Month-on-month, the figures reflect meaningful progress: the number of unemployed individuals declined by 185,000 across the EU and by 184,000 within the euro area compared to December.
Youth unemployment also edged lower, though it remains elevated. Approximately 2.92 million people aged 25 and under were jobless across the EU — including 2.35 million in the eurozone. The youth unemployment rate dipped to 15.1% bloc-wide, down from 15.2% in December, while the eurozone figure fell to 14.8%.
At the country level, Finland recorded the steepest unemployment rate at 10.2%, while Bulgaria and Poland stood at opposite end of the spectrum, each posting the bloc's lowest rate of 3.1%.
The euro area — formally designated EA21 — comprises those EU member states that have adopted the euro as their official currency.
