Russia, Iran Foreign Ministers Hold Phone Talks on Middle East Crisis
"The development of the situation in the region resulting from the unprovoked armed aggression of the US and Israel against Iran was discussed," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Both sides underscored that the strikes represent a breach of foundational international law and carry grave consequences for the broader Middle East region.
"Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed the principled position in favor of de-escalating the situation, renouncing the use of force, and transitioning to a political-diplomatic settlement of the conflict, as well as Russia's readiness to contribute to this in every possible way," the statement said.
The protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure across all countries in the region was also flagged as an urgent priority, the Foreign Ministry added.
The diplomatic outreach follows a large-scale U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran launched Saturday, which killed several senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and U.S.-linked sites across Gulf states.
U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to obliterate Iran's missile capabilities, dismantle its missile industry, and destroy its navy, reiterating that Tehran will not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon.
The military escalation unfolded despite active diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program, which had been brokered by Oman.
