Pentagon Inks Deal with Musk’s xAI to Deploy Grok in Classified Networks
The arrangement would grant Grok access to networks used for sensitive military functions, including intelligence analysis, weapons development, and battlefield operations. Until now, the AI model Anthropic’s Claude had been the sole system deployed in such secure environments, though the Pentagon has raised concerns about embedded safeguards that restrict its usage.
Anthropic has resisted requests to make Claude available for “all lawful purposes,” citing protections against mass surveillance of Americans and deployment in fully autonomous weapons. In contrast, xAI reportedly agreed to the Pentagon’s conditions for unrestricted lawful use.
It remains uncertain whether Grok will fully replace Claude in classified systems or how long a transition would take, given Claude’s existing integration into defense operations, including partnerships with Palantir Technologies.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to meet with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the Pentagon, in what sources describe as a potentially tense discussion. According to reports, Hegseth may issue an ultimatum, warning that failure to lift the model’s safeguards could result in Anthropic being classified as a “supply chain risk.”
Officials have acknowledged that replacing Claude with Grok in classified networks would involve technical challenges, highlighting the complexity of the transition.
