Polish FM says economic pressure will make Russia engage in peace talks
In an interview with a Polish broadcaster, Sikorski explained that a durable settlement would require Russia’s political leadership to acknowledge that the invasion of Ukraine was a mistake and that attempts to rebuild an empire through force are impossible. “This is the problem with dictators. When someone has been in power for (over) 20 years, very few people tell him what reality actually looks like,” he said.
He emphasized that coordinated sanctions remain central to altering Moscow’s calculations. Poland, he noted, has been a strong advocate within the European Union for tightening restrictions on Russia’s financial sector, energy exports, and access to Western technology. Measures targeting Russian oil revenues, alongside limits on insurance, shipping, and price caps, have significantly constrained Moscow’s fiscal flexibility, even if the political effects emerge gradually.
Sikorski highlighted Russia’s increasing dependence on politically unstable partners such as Venezuela, illustrating the long-term costs of isolation from Western markets. He pointed out that energy cooperation between Moscow and Caracas underscores Russia’s shrinking economic options and exposes it to additional risks from sanctions, logistical constraints, and volatile global oil prices.
The minister also rejected proposals that would allow Russia to retain territory in eastern Ukraine, arguing that such concessions would reward aggression. He warned that even limiting negotiations to the Donbas region could be seen by the Kremlin as a compromise, while Russia’s territorial gains over the past year still leave it decades away from fully conquering Ukraine.
