Trump Tells Israeli President to Pardon Netanyahu
Herzog’s office released an image of the letter, bearing Trump’s signature, in which the former U.S. president appealed to the Israeli leader “to fully pardon Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a formidable and decisive wartime prime minister.”
Trump stated, “While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System and its requirements, I believe that this ‘case’ against Bibi, who has fought alongside me for a long time, including against the very tough adversary of Israel, Iran, is a political, unjustified prosecution.”
The message framed the legal actions against Netanyahu as politically driven and undeserved.
In reaction, Herzog’s office clarified that any individual requesting a presidential pardon “must submit a formal request in accordance with the established procedures.”
This response emphasized adherence to official channels and the rule of law.
There has yet to be any official verification from The White House regarding the Israeli president’s statement.
Under Israeli legislation, the president possesses the power to grant pardons or reduce sentences after considering recommendations or assessments from relevant bodies, such as the ministers of justice or defense.
Nonetheless, the legal framework requires that convicted individuals acknowledge their wrongdoing to qualify for a presidential pardon.
Prime Minister Netanyahu, however, continues to deny all allegations brought against him, maintaining his innocence throughout the judicial process.
