French trade union urges for protests to push for revising budget plan
Stressing that the current budget contains “a series of horrors," CGT Secretary-General Sophie Binet called on people to "protest and strike on December 2." She emphasized the importance of worker participation to ensure the debate takes place “under the pressure of mobilization -- to make sure we can bury all the disasters contained in this budget.”
Binet warned that the proposed budget could raise health costs, cut 4,500 education jobs, and reduce family allowances. She invited other unions to join the mobilization, noting that some, like the FSU and Solidaires, have already agreed, while others have yet to commit.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly wrapped up its final debates on the Social Security Financing Bill, passing it to the Senate. Lawmakers will also discuss the contested suspension of the pension reform, which had aimed to gradually raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and had sparked one of the longest strike waves in decades. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu proposed suspending the reform until the next presidential election, pledging no increase before January 2028, addressing opposition concerns and avoiding censure from the Socialist Party.
