Russia states Putin-Trump conditions are not fulfilled yet

(MENAFN) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday that the necessary conditions for a summit between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have not been fulfilled.

"Any summit meeting requires in-depth preparation and careful consideration of all aspects. As of today, neither the first nor the second condition for organizing this meeting has been met," Ryabkov told lawmakers at the State Duma in Moscow.

The diplomat explained that while Russian and US foreign ministries continue preparatory work, the immediate priority is to define the specifics of the framework agreed upon by the two leaders in mid-August. Despite the lack of a high-level meeting, Ryabkov confirmed that both sides remain in constant communication, with security issues remaining central to discussions.

Trump and Putin last met in Alaska on August 15 and subsequently agreed to hold talks in Budapest, but the summit did not proceed. The Kremlin previously noted that the meeting would require a “great deal of homework” and that the two leaders could not simply “meet for the sake of meeting.”

Ryabkov also cited historical grievances as a barrier, including the closure of Russian diplomatic missions in 2017 and 2018, which involved the seizure of property. "The property must be returned. This is an irrevocable requirement. Even if they didn't disgrace themselves, they took away state property protected by diplomatic immunity, and they don't want to return it," he said.

On the topic of direct flights between Russia and the US, Ryabkov said that Moscow supports their resumption but acknowledged that no progress has been made.

When asked about the source of current tensions with the West, Ryabkov pointed to NATO’s expansion eastward and what he described as a “complete disregard for Moscow's interests, primarily in the field of security.”
