Avalanche Leaves Five German Skiers Dead in Italy

(MENAFN) Five German ski mountaineers lost their lives after an avalanche struck Mount Ortles in the Italian Alps, local authorities confirmed Sunday.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, when snow swept across the northern slope of Cima Vertana in South Tyrol, according to an Italian news agency. A group of five German tourists was caught in the avalanche.

Three bodies were recovered on Saturday, while two others—a father and his 17-year-old daughter—were found dead Sunday morning.

Authorities warned that warmer temperatures in the area have made snow conditions unstable, increasing the likelihood of avalanches. They advised climbers and skiers to monitor weather and avalanche warnings closely and to steer clear of high-risk mountain zones.
