Polish leader reveals Trump proposed to give Warsaw security guarantees
(MENAFN) Polish President Karol Nawrocki has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump privately promised Poland additional security guarantees, alongside his public pledge to maintain American forces in the country.
Nawrocki shared his comments after meeting Trump in Washington on Wednesday, explaining that the assurances were given both openly and behind closed doors. While he avoided revealing the specifics of the private discussions, he described them as “unambiguous and strong.”
The remarks come as Trump has frequently emphasized that European NATO members must raise their defense spending, while also suggesting a reduction in Washington’s security commitments to the continent.
Despite earlier speculation about a drawdown, Trump clarified after the meeting that he never intended to withdraw the roughly 10,000 U.S. troops currently based in Poland. He added that this presence could even grow further if Warsaw requested it.
According to Nawrocki, preparations for a possible reinforcement of U.S. forces in Poland will begin right away. He noted that American Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the head of Poland’s National Security Bureau, Slawomir Cenkiewicz, would begin drafting the necessary plans.
Poland has also pledged to surpass the United States in terms of defense spending, announcing that it will dedicate 4.8% of its GDP to the military next year. This level would exceed Washington’s typical 3.2% and make Poland the leading NATO member in terms of defense spending relative to economic output.
