(MENAFN) A catastrophic landslide triggered by intense rainfall has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 residents in a remote village in western Sudan’s Darfur region, according to a statement from the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), the armed group controlling the area.
The SLM/A stated that on August 31, a deadly landslide triggered by heavy rains completely destroyed the population of Tarsin village in the mountainous Marra region. According to the group, only a single individual survived the catastrophe, highlighting the overwhelming magnitude of the disaster.
As of Tuesday morning, the Sudanese government had not released any confirmation or details regarding the incident, leaving the situation shrouded in uncertainty. The region’s remote location and ongoing conflict have made it difficult to verify the claims independently.
