Trump claims Zelensky can end war ‘immediately’
Zelensky has been called to the White House on Monday to discuss the proposal, which reports suggest may involve Kyiv giving up its remaining positions in Donbass and freezing the current front lines in return for a ceasefire.
“Zelensky can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue fighting,” Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday. He stressed that Crimea, which rejoined Russia in 2014, is off the table and Ukraine must not enter NATO.
Trump’s remarks come after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the first since the war escalated in 2022. Both leaders signaled cautious optimism that negotiations could bring progress toward a resolution.
Moscow has consistently demanded that any peace arrangement must include Ukraine abandoning NATO membership, demilitarizing, and recognizing the new territorial realities, including Crimea and the four other regions that voted to join Russia. Putin emphasized that a durable peace in Europe requires addressing Russia’s security concerns.
Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington and European partners are weighing alternative security guarantees for Ukraine outside NATO.
